Food from heaven that nourishes our souls

In John 6, Jesus miraculously feeds a multitude of 5,000 men with five loaves of bread and two small fish. They ate all they wanted and were satisfied.

Jesus that evening leaves them, walking on the Sea of Galilee. In the morning when the crowds do not find Jesus, they get in boats and come to the city of Capernaum to look for Him. When they find Him they ask, “when did you get here?”

In verses 26 and 27 we read Jesus’ response,

26 Jesus replied to them, “I can guarantee this truth: You’re not looking for me because you saw miracles. You are looking for me because you ate as much of those loaves as you wanted. 27 Don’t work for food that spoils. Instead, work for the food that lasts into eternal life. This is the food the Son of Man will give you. After all, the Father has placed his seal of approval on him.”

Jesus knew their real motive—He looks into their hearts. They liked to have their stomachs full. They enjoyed the free meal they received the day before. Jesus calls them to greater heights—to a deeper understanding and commitment.

He reminds them of the temporary condition of this world and their need for spiritual food that only comes from God himself. He is reminding them that all the pleasures this world has to offer are so temporary.

Though we thank God for His temporal blessings, and enjoy them as coming from His gracious hand, we must acknowledge that our souls need something much more substantive—something eternal—food from heaven that nourishes our souls.

And Jesus tells them that he is ready to freely give them this heavenly food so they may have the gift of eternal life. It is the Word of God that Jesus was offering to them as eternal food for their souls.

It is as we believe in the Son of God and daily trust Him that His eternal word nourishes our souls and gives us eternal life. Jesus said, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God” (Luke 4:4).

Father in heaven, thank you for giving us your Son on whom you have placed your seal of complete approval. Give me a heart that is ready not to only receive your temporal blessings but to long for your Word that gives us eternal life. Jesus, help me to daily feed upon the heavenly food that only you can give that I may know an ever-growing experience of eternal life. Amen
