Our faith in Christ should be a way of life not a fulfilling of religious duties
Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
Paul the apostle pleads with the followers of Christ in Rome to see their faith in Christ as a way of life. Being a disciple of Christ is not about fulfilling religious duties. Rather, Paul calls upon them to make the Savior the center of their daily lives as an act of worship.
We do not offer animal sacrifices anymore, as were offered in Old Testament times. Rather we offer up to God our own bodies as living and holy sacrifices. This is now what is pleasing to God. This is now what God wants of us. This is an acceptable response. It is our spiritual service of worship.
Our faith must be daily lived out as a response of thanksgiving because we have been freely redeemed through the death of God’s Son. Because of the enormous grace that has been given to us, we must respond with whole-hearted surrender to Him who died for us. This, Paul says, is true worship.
As we daily follow Christ, we reject the empty thoughts and ways of this fallen world. We give our minds over to the Word of God and to the purifying work of the Holy Spirit. It becomes the goal of our lives to become like the Savior who gave His all for us. He continues to set us free from the remaining presence of sin within us, so that by His grace we can be transformed.
It is as we are continually renewed by His grace that we find the will of God for our lives. Transformation brings assurance. We know that He is leading. We discover what is good for our lives. We see that His Spirit within is allowing us to please God. We also know that by His power within us, we are growing into maturity in Christ our Lord.
Pray: Heavenly Father thank you for your endless mercies. Help me to daily make your Son the center of my life. I surrender to Him as my Lord and Savior. Let not the thoughts of this fallen world control my mind. By your grace, continue the transformation of my life so that I can truly worship you. Thank for daily leading me and for allowing me to know your good, pleasing and perfect will for my life. Amen.
