Put on humility like a servant’s apron
1 Peter 5:5-6
5 In the same way you younger people must submit yourselves to your elders. And all of you must put on the apron of humility, to serve one another; for the scripture says, “God resists the proud, but shows favor to the humble.” 6 Humble yourselves, then, under God’s mighty hand, so that he will lift you up in his own good time.
Our goal as Christians is to live as Jesus lived in following His example. He lived a humble life of service. He gave His life for us. If we want to follow His example we must ask God to give us humble hearts. As our hearts are changed, and we live in humility, we show forth the power of His grace.
Peter tells us to put on humility like a servant’s apron and serve others. It is much more natural for us to want to be served rather than serve. We must daily ask God to take the pride out of our hearts and give us a humble servant’s heart so that our lives might glorify Him.
Peter gives us great motivation for living a humble life. He tells us that If we act in pride God will resist us. God cannot do the work of His kingdom through the proud. But Peter also tells us that if we humble ourselves and serve others, God draws near to us and we gain His favor—He gives us His grace. He gives us grace to be changed and become like Jesus.
Therefore Peter tells us to make a daily effort to walk in humility, remembering that God is in control. He is the Lord who opens doors of opportunity in His Kingdom. As we surrender to His grace, and seek to live a humble life like our Savior, He will lift us up and use the spiritual gifts he has given us for the glory of His own name and for the advancement of His kingdom.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, I come to you, asking for you to give me a heart of humility. Help me to daily put on humility like a servant’s apron. Help me, through your grace, to follow the example of the Savior in humble service to others. Amen.
