The love of God flows through us by the life of the Spirit within us
3 Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty.
There arose a dispute in the early church concerning the care of widows. Apparently, in the community of believers, a system was put in place to aid the widows who were suffering. They did not have the means to provide for themselves. It also appears that the system was failing. The non-Jewish widows were being neglected.
The apostles act by selecting seven men to supervise the distribution of help to the widows. They were to make sure that there was a proper distribution in order that every need was properly met. The apostles placed a very high qualification on those who were to take over this work. They needed to be men of good repute, full of the Holy spirit and wisdom.
These are three very important qualities of every disciple of Christ. God wants to give us a good reputation as a person who is faithful to the work of God. God, by His grace, wants to give us a heart of faithfulness. As a disciple of Jesus, we need to be people who are known to be trustworthy and consistent in our walk with God.
We need to be filled with the Spirit. We wait upon God in prayer, praying in the Spirit, surrendering our lives to the Spirit’s power and life. We are used of God when we allow the Spirit to produce His fruit through our lives. The love of God flows through us by the life of the Spirit within us.
We yield to the Holy Spirit so that His gifts might be manifested in our lives, bringing edification and blessing to others. We yield to the Holy Spirit, knowing that the work of God cannot be done in human strength.
And finally, we need to be filled with wisdom. God freely gives wisdom to those who ask. We need wisdom from above for every trial and temptation we face in this life. Through God-given wisdom we are able to do the work of God in a manner that honors Him, and to see others brought to faith.
Pray: Father, I want to be faithful. By your grace give me a faithful heart of obedience so that my life might be an example of a person of good reputation. Fill me with your Holy Spirit, and help me to learn how to more fully yield to your Spirit that your fruit and gifts might be active in my life. Give me wisdom for every problem of life so that what I do and say might honor your name. Amen
